  • Tesla's NACS EV connector is expected to standardize the EV charging landscape in the USA
Jul 31, 2023 Tesla's NACS EV connector is expected to standardize the EV charging landscape in the USA
The NACS interface is currently leading the global competition, simplifying the EV charging process and putting a single standard in focus for the future.     Us automakers Ford and General Motors will adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging connector as the preferred interface for their upcoming EV models. In the days following GM's June 2023 announcement, a sizable number of charging station companies, including Tritium, and other automakers, including Volvo, Rivian, and Mercedes-Benz, quickly announced their intention to follow suit. Hyundai is also studying the possibility of making changes. This shift will make the Tesla EV connector the standard for electric vehicle charging in North America and beyond. At present, many connector companies offer a variety of interfaces to meet the needs of different automotive manufacturers OEM and regional markets.     Tesla's NACS EV connector   One complicating factor in the widespread adoption of electric vehicles is the lack of a unified EV charging connector. Just as the adoption of Type-C USB connectors has simplified the future of device charging, a universal interface for car charging will enable seamless vehicle charging. Currently, electric vehicle owners must plan to charge at a specific charging station, or use an adapter to charge at an incompatible charging station. In the future, using the Tesla NACS standard, drivers of all electric vehicles will be able to charge at each stop during their journey without using an adapter. Older electric cars and other types of charging ports will be able to connect using Tesla's Magic Dock adapter. However, NACS is not used in Europe, not even by Tesla. Charging infrastructure in Europe uses the CCS T2 standard. Tesla charging stations can also be charged using CCS T2 or European Tesla connectors."       Current charging standards Depending on the region and vehicle manufacturer, the wiring harness world also lists a range of electric vehicle charging connectors currently in use. Cars designed for AC charging use Type 1 and type 2 plugs. Type 1 includes SAE J1772 (J-plug). It has a charging speed of up to 7.4 kW. Type 2 includes the Mennekes or IEC 62196 standard (made in 2018) for European and Asian vehicles and is known as SAE J3068 in North America. It is a three-phase plug with a charging power of up to 43 kW. Electric vehicle charging gun standard   For faster DC charging, use a combined charging system or CCS. This interface adds two high-speed DC fast charging pins to the J1722 Type 1 plug. The CCS2 version is widely used in Australia. The CCS connector provides 500 amps and 1000 volts DC at 350 kW (kW).   The national standard GB/T 20234.2-2015 for electric vehicles in China is another electric vehicle charging connector that offers AC and DC configurations. In Japan, near-traditional CHAdeMo connectors are still used.     Tesla NACS EV charging connec...

  • Recall | Mazda is recalling 340,000 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-3 vehicles in North America due to wear on the pin of the reverse camera wire harness connector
Jul 24, 2023 Recall | Mazda is recalling 340,000 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-3 vehicles in North America due to wear on the pin of the reverse camera wire harness connector
On July 20, 2023, more than 340,000 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-3 vehicles were recalled in the United States America and Canada due to a Mazda reverse camera problem.     The 2014-2018 recalled Mazda3 and 2016-2021 Mazda CX-3 rearview mirror images may show flickering or distorted images that do not display properly.   In May 2015, Mazda drew a complaint in the United States for a backup camera problem, and more camera image problems were reported from June 2015 to June 2017. Mazda launched an investigation into the wiring harnesses that connect car cameras after receiving eight additional complaints of faulty reverse cameras.   After an investigation, engineers determined that the rearview camera problem was caused by a worn pin of the reverse camera wire harness connector. Mazda said the rearview mirror wire harness fasteners had a design issue that could damage the wiring harness due to vibration during normal driving and when opening and closing the lift door. Naturally causes the connector pin to wear, resulting in high resistance. This in turn affects image distortion or flicker.   Mazda has issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) informing dealers about the diagnosis and repair of the reverse camera problem. However, Transport Canada contacted Mazda about the handling of the backup camera issue as a technical service bulletin.   Transport Canada recommended that Mazda recall the backup cameras, and Mazda decided to fix car wiring harnesses connected to the cameras in 2014-2018 Mazda3 5-door hatchback and 2016-2021 CX-3 vehicles in Canada and the United States.   According to Mazda, the back-up camera problem has led to nine complaints and one report of property damage, but thankfully no claims of death or injury; This is the silver lining of misfortune.   The Mazda reverse camera recall letter will be mailed on September 12th, 2023, and dealers will inspect and possibly replace the rearview camera. Mazda dealers will also install wire harness fastening seals. Mazda officials say the new parts are manufactured using tight seals that protect the wiring harness from damage.

  • Car rare earth removal, subversion or fantasy?
Jun 29, 2024 Car rare earth removal, subversion or fantasy?
Car rare earth removal, subversion or fantasy?   "No rare earths, no car"? Tesla, the company that is best at revolutionizing technology in the world, is trying to disrupt the norm again! Musk claimed that the next generation of permanent magnet motors will achieve "zero rare earth"! Is this a leap in technology, or a challenge to industry common sense? The rare-earth removal revolution set off by Tesla may be far more simple than we think.   Musk claims that the next generation of permanent magnet motors will achieve "zero rare earth"   01 The long-planned de-rare-earth process   Rare earth elements are non-renewable strategic resources. In the core components of electric vehicles - motors, rare earth permanent magnet materials are widely used and critical, and their excellent magnetic and thermal conductivity properties lay a solid foundation for efficient operation and performance improvement of vehicles.   The main material of permanent magnet motor: rare earth The majority of rare earth resources are in China, which currently controls nearly 60 percent of rare earth mining operations, more than 85 percent of processing capacity and more than 90 percent of permanent magnet production, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The deeper consideration of Tesla's de-rare-earth is to seek to reduce its dependence on China's rare earth supply chain to avoid potential supply chain risks.   In 2022, China will account for 70% of global rare earth production. The US trade representative claimed that China dominates the rare earth field, making the US supply chain "vulnerable", just as foreign chip technology has been "trapped" in China, China's dominant position in the rare earth field may also pose a "rare earth threat" to foreign countries. To this end, this is not only a contest between car companies, but also a game between countries.   02 Three kinds of technical routes for rare earth removal at home and abroad   In the process of motor rare-earth removal, breakthroughs are mainly sought through the following three technical routes at home and abroad.   Tesla: Continue production using permanent magnet motors but it does not require any rare earth elements First, revolutionary motor design: Tesla is at the forefront of the industry, not only successfully reduced the use of rare earths in the Model 3 by 25%, but also actively developed a revolutionary magneto - SPSRM motor, which completely eliminates rare earths, but can achieve excellent efficiency and performance. Domestic Toyota is also developing a new type of magnet, and strive to maintain its excellent heat resistance and magnet properties in the reduction of rare earth.   Iron nitride manufactured by Niron Magnets Alternative material development: General Motors and Stellantis worked closely with start-up Niron Magnetics to develop high-performance rare-earth-free permanent magnet motors using common elements of iron and nitrogen.
