Recall | Mazda is recalling 340,000 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-3 vehicles in North America due to wear on the pin of the reverse camera wire harness connector Jul 24, 2023

On July 20, 2023, more than 340,000 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-3 vehicles were recalled in the United States America and Canada due to a Mazda reverse camera problem.

The 2014-2018 recalled Mazda3 and 2016-2021 Mazda CX-3 rearview mirror images may show flickering or distorted images that do not display properly.

In May 2015, Mazda drew a complaint in the United States for a backup camera problem, and more camera image problems were reported from June 2015 to June 2017. Mazda launched an investigation into the wiring harnesses that connect car cameras after receiving eight additional complaints of faulty reverse cameras.

After an investigation, engineers determined that the rearview camera problem was caused by a worn pin of the reverse camera wire harness connector. Mazda said the rearview mirror wire harness fasteners had a design issue that could damage the wiring harness due to vibration during normal driving and when opening and closing the lift door. Naturally causes the connector pin to wear, resulting in high resistance. This in turn affects image distortion or flicker.

Mazda has issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) informing dealers about the diagnosis and repair of the reverse camera problem. However, Transport Canada contacted Mazda about the handling of the backup camera issue as a technical service bulletin.

Transport Canada recommended that Mazda recall the backup cameras, and Mazda decided to fix car wiring harnesses connected to the cameras in 2014-2018 Mazda3 5-door hatchback and 2016-2021 CX-3 vehicles in Canada and the United States.

According to Mazda, the back-up camera problem has led to nine complaints and one report of property damage, but thankfully no claims of death or injury; This is the silver lining of misfortune.

The Mazda reverse camera recall letter will be mailed on September 12th, 2023, and dealers will inspect and possibly replace the rearview camera. Mazda dealers will also install wire harness fastening seals. Mazda officials say the new parts are manufactured using tight seals that protect the wiring harness from damage.
