What is the automotive Industry Wiring Standards? Jun 28, 2023

The automotive industry has long relied on a set of standards to ensure the safety and reliability of vehicles. The most important of these is the automotive wiring standard - which governs the wiring used in cars, trucks and other vehicles.

Automotive wiring harness standards help manufacturers ensure that wires meet their intended use and are compatible with other vehicle components. These standards can also help engineers ensure that car wiring is safe and efficient.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is the leading organization responsible for developing universally accepted automotive wiring standards. These SAE standards are used by automakers around the world, and they play a vital role in ensuring the safety and reliability of vehicles.

Why are standards so important to the automotive industry?

To state the obvious, standards are critical to manufacturers because they ensure that products work reliably and safely. When using complex electronic components, there is a high risk of overheating, electric shock, fire and damage to surrounding components. Therefore, it is essential to ensure standards of consistency and quality.

Standards help manufacturers use parts from different suppliers and ensure that these parts all meet standards and work compatible. If each company produces parts according to its own standards, the end product will be unpredictable and unreliable at best. It is also important that many industry standards apply internationally, especially in today's global markets, supply chains and procurement. All components must meet certification and safety standards.

There are three major organizations that develop standards in the engineering field :SAE, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). While SAE is the primary standard-setter for the automotive industry, it is important to be familiar with these three standards because they are widely used throughout the automotive industry and engineering.

Automotive wiring standards are developed in accordance with the International Electrical Commission (IEC) and corresponding automotive industry standards. Here are some common car wiring standards:

1. ISO 6722: This standard specifies the requirements for low-voltage cables and conductors used in automotive electrical systems, including insulation materials, conductor dimensions, fire resistance and electrical characteristics.

2. SAE J1128: This is a standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) that defines the electrical characteristics, material requirements, and test methods of automotive wires.

3. JASO D611: This is a standard developed by the Japan Automotive Standardization Organization (JASO) that covers the specifications and test methods for automotive wires.

4. LV 112: This is a standard issued by the Federation of German Automobile Manufacturers (VDA), which specifies the fault conditions and environmental requirements for automotive electronic systems.

In automotive wiring standards, the following aspects are usually considered:

- Cable and wire selection: According to different application requirements, select the right type of cable and wire for the load and environmental conditions.

Insulation and fire resistance: Ensure the safety of cables and wires under high temperature, high humidity and other harsh conditions.

- Protective measures: Provide adequate protection for cables and wires against mechanical damage, wear or corrosion.

- Electrical connection: Ensure the correct connection of cables and wires to reduce problems such as resistance, voltage drop and electromagnetic interference.

- Safety: Consider the safety performance of cables and conductors, such as preventing short circuit, overload and fire.

It should be noted that the specific car wiring standards may vary by country and region, and it is best to refer to local regulations and standards for design and installation. When wiring cars, it is recommended to consult a professional automotive electrical engineer or follow the relevant industry guidelines.
